Minecraft and Immersive Learning Environments for School Librarians

Mar 16, 2016 12:00am

Credits: None available.

Members: $0.00
Standard: $6.99

Gamification, particularly Minecraft, has been a hot topic for librarians and educators recently. This webinar presents an overview of current virtual worlds and how librarians are using them and shares potential future opportunities with virtual reality systems in the near future. Dr. Valerie Hill has worked with 5th graders who designed and built a Minecraft Digital Citizenship Game to promote information literacy. Beth S. O’Connell has worked in several virtual worlds to share immersive learning experiences, such as virtual field trips.

  • Participants will be given an overview of emerging trends in virtual worlds with emphasis on how school librarians can utilize them.
  • Participants will view and discuss specific immersive learning experiences relating to information literacy in global digital participatory culture.
  • Participants will be given links and instructions for exploring virtual environments themselves and examples of various ways to use them from the simplest (web-based immersive learning environments) to the more complex (scripting and building with virtual worlds).

  • Valerie Hill, School Librarian, Adjunct Instructor of Library Science, and Information Literacy Consultant
  • Beth S. O’Connell , School Librarian, Manassas Park City Schools
